My Aspergers Story

My Aspergers Story

Join me on my journey of triumph, discovery and family.

At the age of 15 I dropped out of school and fell into a deep depression where I bordered on suicide. Amidst the turmoil I was diagnosed with Aspergers (Higher Functioning Autism) which began to explain my situation. As my family learned about my disorder we began to find strengths to it, and we began to play to them.

“Congratulations to you Josh for not only having the courage and determination to follow your dreams but for leaving the breadcrumbs of inspiration behind you, to help others follow theirs.”
– Ernie Els

We discovered two incredibly important things. Aspergers people need time. Time to manage themselves, and a chance to survive the teenage years, which are the toughest.

We also discovered that to an “Aspie”, passion is the water of life.

My passion was nature, and my parents fuelled it like a fire. We journeyed to the opposite ends of the earth on a challenge called a “Big Year”, identifying birds and exploring Deserts and Jungles in search of my calling. We found it.

My aim is to help others do the same, through my book, Josh’s Big Year, which tells the tale of our epic journey. Through “Under the Hood” videos in which I take you behind the scenes of Aspergers and what we’ve learnt about it. And finally, through my wildlife documentary series, shown here, which follow me on adventures around the world in search of treasure; ancient and present, chasing my dreams and proving what can be done with the right amount of passion, and a dash of Aspergers.
